cost of owning a car

The owner of our house informed us if we’re willing to buy a used Ford car of his friend. He’s only selling it for 70,000 baht (217.189 USD)! It’s quite cheap, right? But we’ve declined the offer. You all know that this month we’ll not be paid so we’ve been tightening our belt to stretch our budget for two months. This year we need to save because we’ll be going home next year and for airfare alone, we’ll be spending at least 50,000 baht (1,551.350 USD) for the three of us. That would be lessened if we could avail any promo though.

After the offer, my hubby and I talked how affordable it is today to buy cars especially used cars in excellent conditions. Maybe it would be our next project to save for a car. It would be advantageous for my husband as he’s working about 25-30 kilometers away from home and he’s traveling everyday. I believe that the owner of the house could help us scout for a cheap used car. He could help us know everything about the history of the car, including the number of previous owners (at most 2), if the car was ever involved in an accident, any previous mechanical problems and the the maintenance history of the car . I believe also with my husbands sound judgment when it comes to cars and motorcycles.

I know that once we’ll be having our own car, additional expenses will be expected- license tags, gas, and maintenance of the car. We’ll most likely going to have to spend up to $10-$20/week for gas. Every three months, we will probably need to get the oil changed for about $25. So, for the basics, it could cost up to $1,000 a year, and that does not include other costs such as wiper blades, tune-ups, and other problems (dead battery, flat tire, transmission, etc.). Let’s not forget about insurance like the HVG insurance which is very much helpful for protecting both the driver and the owner from any kind of troubles , depreciation, parking fees, tolls and registration, among other things. Oh wait, the cost of car ownership is probably a whole lot more than I think rindu.
